The Week Ahead - Key Events and Focus

The week ahead will be relatively quite on the earnings front with a bulk of the volume on Thursday morning. There are some notable brokerage conferences this week with the Cowen and Barclays Healthcare conference, the and the JP Morgan Aviation, Transportation, and Industrial conference. On the Economic front the major news will be the US February CPI numbers out Tuesday as well as China's February economic data which will be out Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. US Retail Sales on Wednesday should be watched closely with the recent upward run in Amazon and weakness in many other large big box retailers. In Europe the Euro-zone CPI is on Friday.

Friday's big market surge spiked S&P bullish sentiment to 66% from 50% and Nasdaq to 70%.  When I've seen these types of large sentiment moves some give back should be expected (when it's moving down too).   The positives from Friday were focused with the Nasdaq making a new high while I can't ignore the % of stocks making new 20 day highs was high at 48% in the NDX 100 and decent at 30% in the S&P.  The Russell 2000 also continued it strong run but like many of the other indexes has not made a new high yet.  And tech is the only US sector that has made a new high.  Lastly, late on Friday I added another 2.5% size in SPY, QQQ, IWM puts in April which I will detail tomorrow.  On my recent market webinar in February I laid out the pattern for a lower high bounce but also left open the possibility of a 2007 type of top with several shake outs and top drawn out over months.  The next few weeks should be very telling heading into Q1 earnings reporting season with very high expectations.
